Map from Tertulia layout at Mirogoj Cemetery, Zagreb, Croatia

Site-specific installation in collaboration with visual artist Eduardo Molinari.

Second iteration of the project first realized at Recoleta cemetery in Buenos Aires (see Tertulia – Recoleta, under Sound Art). This version takes Tertulia’s main ideas and develops them further, approaching the space as an integrated geography, designing a path for the audience that formally resembled a radio (metaphorically transforming the space into both a receiver and a trasmitter), and creating a real time system for the sound composition.
Visually, a series of intimate spatial interventions (cabinets and observatories) involving objects, photographs and video were placed at the crossroads of the paths, that functioned as resting stations pacing our walk through the cemetery and displaying a multiplicity of visual records – real, intervened and fictitious – from the Croatian and the World’s history.
Sonically, a computer system was powered by the several generations of names present at Mirogoj – the nominal mass of Zagreb’s past – creating a series of sound “Fluxes” and transforming them in real time into multiple “resonances”, “turbulences” and “explosions”. Several “Synchronies” articulated these fluxes over time, unfolding in the space as a single gesture. Multiple voices emerged unexpectedly, bringing back forgotten echoes, while an omnipresent and disembodied “ethereal voice” tried to articulate what cannot be named.
The sound was diffused through an array of 40 speakers and attempted to create a space within a space: a transparent territory of sound, an immaterial topography that changed dynamically as you walked through it, where each member of the audience became the centre of the listening.
