LA VARSOVIA

For three double-basses, intervened double-bass and surround electronics

LA VARSOVIA (1999) for 3 double basses intervened double bass and electronic sounds was premiered at Festival del Rojas II – C.C.R.Rojas. The players were Facundo Ordoñez, Sebastián “El Greco”, and Patricio Cotella. The intervened double-bass was an instrument designed by Nicolás Varchausky and built by luthier Pablo Verdi. It consisted of a conga body presented horizontally, with a double bass bridge and double-bass strings and a tuner head on the side of it, and a set of cello strings and bridge on the skin of it. It was mounted on two cymbal stands from two pipe attachments coming out of the side of the conga. One of the sections of the piece requires the player to leave their double-basses and get all three at the same time to play this new instrument.
